wire

I’m running out. I was working on some new bats and spiders over the weekend and  realized that the big spool of wire I got at the flea market a couple years ago, the wire that is ideal for bats and spiders,  the spool that seemed like a lifetime supply when I got it, is nearly gone.  There weren’t any markings on the spool  and I don’t know what it is- it’s pretty stiff  and it’s flat on two sides; if you’ve got any ideas on what it might be or where I might get more or if you have some in your basement – I’d love to hear about it.

  1. I’m delighted to have found you! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking at your images on flickr – your work is charmingly gorgeous.

  2. Hi Ann,
It looks similar to the floral stem wire that I have from Michael’s. It has a bit of an edge on it, not the flat two sides that you’re using, but it is also fairly stiff. Mine is about 20gauge, but it may come in a smaller gauge, too. Maybe it would work as a replacement for you.

  3. p.s.
I emailed my dad who lives in brooklyn and has a basement full of stuff. I’m sure he’s seen this before, so I’ll let you know if I find anything out.
You *must* be able to continue to make bats!!! 😉

  4. If you take a scrap of that down to a good hardware store, they will likely be able to match it, or tell you what gauge it is so you can order more.

It looks like the same type of wire they use in underwire bras. I’ve googled to see if I could find it but the ones I saw only come in pre-formed sizes. Surely somewhere out there though – there must be some in a spool!

  6. I wonder if your wire is “fret wire”. My husband is a luthier and your picture looks sorta like the wire he uses to replace the worn out frets on guitar necks. You might look on line in a guitar repair catalogue, or a Luthier supply catalogue to see if the wire they offer for sale is what you are using. Let me know if I was right. Or, if you want to send me a small sample, like an inch, I will show it to my husband and see what he thinks it is, he knows wire like we know fabric! Good luck to you, your work is beautiful and magical. I found your Blog through SpiritCloth Blog which is my daily dose. Love to another artist of Planet eARTh.
