The sides of the linen strip are unfinished and frayed, when it’s rolled up it has a plush, carpet feel I like.
And the size of this scroll project was magic for me. It was such a low pressure, pleasure to stitch. The small, consistent effort kept my hands moving and ideas flowing. You know the rule:
“A middle aged craft lady in motion tends to stay in motion and a middle aged craft lady at rest tends to stay at rest.”

I approached it improvisationally and the imagery evolved in a fabley direction I like. It could have gone on forever but I felt like the ideal size was reached at about 4 feet.
Another has already begun, this time experimenting with staying abstract. I usually fail at this (some image creeps in…) but that does not matter, the shift in thinking is valuable, it wakes up different parts of my imagination. This would be a great kid/beginner project to start a little stitcher.
The scroll was inspired by Artist Aitor Saraiba. If you don’t already know of his work please go have a look- you will be enchanted.
Check out some scrolls from Stitch Club members – so energetic, personal and imaginative. Excellent work.

whats next
Get ready for the fall thrifted fabric challenge. It’s less about what you make and more about what you make it with. Stay tuned for details in the next newsletter. For now have your eyes open for thrifted clothing (menswear is rich territory) you could transform into owls or crows or elephants or vessels etc.
I haven’t made a summer scroll yet, but I’m so inspired! Loved seeing the finished piece in your video—it turned out beautifully. Definitely up for a thrifty challenge—can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks for the beautiful idea!
Definitely up for a thrifted challenge! I love your scroll.
A thrifty challenge sound about perfect right now in August….hope to hear more soon. The scrolls are wornderful….I’ve collected chubby stubby sticks on my walks….for a scroll. Thanks Ann
Ann Another fun Project I did the Summer Stroll. Added on a couple times and still going til Labor Day.
Will be ready for the next Ann Woods.
Thanks so much Ann
Me too for Summer Scroll Challenge. Can’t wait!
Oh my gosh look there’s my very slow scroll here, thanks for the feature! It’s been the perfect Summer companion as gardening and travel has taken over much of my stitch time. I’m all set for the thrifted challenge too. My clothing swap was last weekend and I picked up something fun to cut up. Exciting!
Loving the idea of a thrifty fall challenge!
Love your scroll so much Ann. I did one in July and I have a lot of fun but I think the next one will be as little as yours. It’s so lovely. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity.
A thrifted challenge for fall is perfect timing for me, as I’m gathering ideas for leading a “Makers Night” at the thrift store where I volunteer. I’ve loved seeing everyone’s scrolls in the member app. I learn so much from this wonderful group of lovely humans!
Anne , this something I would love to try . My question is , does the scroll need to have a fabric backing to cover up not so pretty stitches ?
I am not Anne, but will give you my answer to this question. The answer is no. Reason #1 is that the purpose of doing this is primarily in the making or the doing. Being “beautiful” is secondary, and, anyway, they are all beautiful because of the hands and spirit that made them. Reason #2 is that the back is part of it. It actually gives a kind of history of the stitching. That is beautiful, too.
The Scrolls have turned out so nice!!
I love this challenge!
The thrifted item into an owl or crow sounds like fun!! I can’t wait!
Your work is beautiful Ann!
Yes to a thrift d fabric exchange!!
Love your scroll progression! Look forward to seeing your abstract version. I admire people who can do abstract. Abstract eludes me, I just can’t make it work for me, (am trying). Yes, sewing the summer scroll has been so much fun. Finished June. Now working on July & Aug on a new piece but will sew all together when done. It keeps me doing a little something as I have become a slug this summer. I am a thrift shop fanatic, so yes to a thrifty challenge. Thanks for all your inspiration, happy to be here. (And thanks for posting shot of my scroll!)
Thank you Ann, as always it’s a good day when I receive an email from you! Too many projects, so little time. X
I love the scroll and it inspires me to try my had at it — a manageable size for these busy days.
The thrifting project also inspires, and I hope I can find (make!) time for it.
I made Mr Frog from a thrifted men’s wool blazer. I love him so (too) much. We took him on our vacation and snapped photos of him hiking and paddle boarding with us. It was a blast. Bonus was the jacket came with great buttons. I need ideas for the cool label and the pockets. I saved them for another project!
Thanks Ann
Done vertically instead of horizontally, that would be so cool to put down the front of a tunic or dress – great idea for tiny bits!
