miss petunia’s lazy day and summer reading

I don’t need much of an excuse to pull out my old box of doll house treasures and I was curious if my tiny rag dolls are in the same doll house scale as my furniture. They are, they accidentally or maybe by a subconscious direction, are a perfect fit.  And just like that Miss Petunia is fully outfitted. She has everything a tiny doll needs.

The box of doll house things – the doll house that was the center of my creative life for much of my little-ness is full of wonders. It only resurfaced a few years ago and this was the first time I fully explored all the little treasures.

Including one of Miss Petunia’s earliest ancestors – this funny girl I made to live in my house. And a tiny book for her to read. Holding and examining these things I made 40 plus years ago has a very strange sensation about it that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Miss Petunia is surrendering to the thick hot city day and lying around in her underwear reading.
It sounds like a good idea.  Are you reading something great? I recently re-read In Cold Blood – Truman Capote is such a master and currently I have two going – A Moveable Feast – Ernest Hemingway and A Path With A Heart – Jack Kornfield.  Also, one of my most favorite books, and I think a fabulous summer read, is Main St. – Sinclair Lewis.  If you feel like sharing your favorites please do – just leave it in the comments to this post.

All the Light We Can Not See by Anthony Doerr is a great read!

  2. The Secret Garden by France’s Hodgson Burnett. My childhood favorite that I still love to disappear into.

  3. Since I’m in the middle of ‘making mice’ – my next book will be “Stuart Little”! So sweet that you kept all of this and it now has a ‘new owner’!

  4. You pushed all my buttons with this post! I have been wondering if these dolls were dollhouse scale. I can’t wait to make a little home for these ladies. I recently found a copy of my favorite book as a child, “The Doll’s House” by Rumer Godden. It still made me cry after all these years.

The Dolls House is an all time favorite here, too!

  5. Just discovered your work and blog. Very enjoyable! Love the dollhouse and inhabitants. Makes me think of my favourite books as a child, The Borrowers. As for what book I’m reading today, absolutely enjoying a new one by Anne Tyler called Vinegar Girl which is sort of a remake of Taming of the Shrew. Laughed out loud quite a few times. It would make a very enjoyable movie.

I almost always have more than one book going at a time. Just finished Sophie’s Heart by Lori Wick . I am reading a WWII themed devotional straight through for the first reading. I will be starting These Happy Golden Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Those books are always in the rotation.

Just finished The Long Hello by Cathie Borrie, a memoir, and it’s excellent. Just started A Field Guide to Getting Lost, by Rebecca Solnit, so far it is magical. And Ann, I’m enjoying the stories about your dolls, past and present, thank you.

  8. So amazing and cosy! What a lovely doll, Ann! Everything takes me back to my childhood when i made all the clothing for my doll. My fantasy took my doll and me to the big fancy ballrooms dressed in beautiful gowns made with scraps of lace, cloth and wool.
    Have a beautiful day!

Completely in love with Miss Petunia’s furniture and all the tiny objects.Loved that post!

  10. I loved “In Cold Blood” as well. Your little doll set-up made me think of a book that I have that you might enjoy — “Dollhouses from the V&A Museum of Childhood.” It’s an illustrated history of dollhouses that begins with a German dollhouse from 1673. I got the book fairly inexpensively from Amazon.

  11. If you enjoy reading books about dolls and their adventures, you will like “The Doll People” series by Ann Martin and Laura Godwin, illustrated by Brian Selznick. http://amzn.to/2amCgEK I am an avid reader and have to say that these books are well written and delightful. I also enjoy the many doll- themed books by Rumer Godden. So glad to see other adults enjoying the world of dolls! It’s just plain fun.

Thank you, Ann, for sharing this. I have come back to this post because I love it so. When I had the flu in May/June I went on a binge read of all my Georgette Heyer books. Delightful fun. With a side trip to read a comfort story, The Little White Horse, by Elizabeth Goudge. An all time favorite. (warning: don’t see the movie of same name. It is a travesty.) I aim to read The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang next.
